ITB Summit on Water-Energy Nexus for Indonesia’s Future Security

The ITB Summit on Water Energy Nexus for National Water and Energy Security is an event held at the ITB Jakarta Campus, aiming to discuss the interconnection between water and energy to ensure future national security. This event is organized by the Directorate of Research and Community Service (DRPM), the Directorate of Multidisciplinary Science and Technology Application (DPITM), the Center for New and Renewable Energy Research, and the Water Resources Development Center at ITB.

The event opened with a speech by ITB Rector, Prof. Reini D. Wirahadikusumah, Ph.D., who emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration to address the water and energy crisis challenges in Indonesia. She highlighted that technology, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), will be a major pillar of future development but will require a significant amount of energy to operate. ITB specializes in the fields of energy and water and is committed to making a substantial contribution in these areas.

This event also featured UGM Rector, Prof. Ova Emilia, Ph.D., who shared perspectives from UGM on the challenges and opportunities in the water-energy nexus in Indonesia.

Panel Discussion Session brought together several national experts who shared their insights and strategies:
- Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Ir. Dadan Kusdiana, M.Sc., presented a plan for "Strengthening the Implementation of Energy Transition in Indonesia."
- Director of Water Resources Development, Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR), Dr. Muhammad Rizal, delivered a presentation on "Optimizing Water Resources Potential in Indonesia’s Energy Transition."
- Dr. Evi Anggraheni from Universitas Indonesia presented "The Roadmap for Research and Innovation at Universitas Indonesia to Address Water and Energy Challenges."
- ITB Vice Rector for Research and Innovation, Prof. Ir. I Gede Wenten, M.Sc., Ph.D., shared recent developments in technology to support the water-energy nexus in Indonesia.

The panel discussion was moderated by Prof. Ir. Muhammad Syahril Badri Kusuma, Ph.D. from ITB’s Water Resources Engineering Expertise Group, and attended by hundreds of participants from various backgrounds.

Breakout sessions on five key topics followed, each facilitated by Prof. Ir. Ari Darmawan Pasek, Ph.D. from ITB’s Thermal Science and Engineering Expertise Group:
1. Geothermal Hydrology and Power Plants – focused on utilizing geothermal resources for energy needs.
2. Hydropower Plants, Biofuel, and Forest Hydrology – discussed the potential of water resources and biofuel to support energy resilience.
3. Floating Solar Power for Clean Water and Electricity – explored innovations in floating solar technology as a source of energy and clean water.
4. Water-Based Energy Storage (Hydrogen, Ammonia) – examined the potential of hydrogen and ammonia as energy storage solutions.
5. Earth Processes (Atmosphere and Climate) and Marine-Based Renewable Energy – investigated the role of marine- and atmosphere-based renewable energy sources.
