L'Oréal - UNESCO Women in Science National Fellowship 2024: Encouragement for Indonesian Women Researchers

Friday, 31 May 2024, the "L'Oréal Roadshow and Socialization - UNESCO Women in Science National Fellowship 2024" event took place at the Amphitheater, Institute for Science and Technology Development (LPIT) Building, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). This event was held from 10.00 to 11.30 WIB and presented various important speakers who play a role in supporting and advancing the role of women in the field of science in Indonesia.

This event was attended by resource persons, namely:

 M. Fikri Alhabsie - Corporate Responsibility Director, L'Oréal Indonesia
 Prof. Fenny Martha Dwivany, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D. - FWIS Indonesia Jury
 Dr. Neni Sintawardani - FWIS Indonesia Jury
 Karlia Meitha, Ph.D. - Winner of FWIS Indonesia 2023

Excerpts from the Welcome and Presentation

Dr. Itje Chodidjah, M.A, opened the event by emphasizing the importance of the L'Oréal - UNESCO Women in Science (WIS) program in advancing science and supporting women researchers. Since 2004, this program has provided scholarships to 71 female researchers in Indonesia to develop their research.

Dr. Yuli Setyo Indartono and Dr. Agus Supriatna also gave a speech appreciating this program and encouraging active participation from female researchers in Indonesia. Dr. Yuli highlighted examples of female researchers who succeeded despite great challenges and emphasized that ITB fully supports this program without gender discrimination. Meanwhile Dr. Agus Supriatna expressed full support from LLDIKTI Region IV and hoped that more lecturers and young female researchers from various universities would participate.

Sharing Session and Important Information

The next session was a sharing session which presented speakers M. Fikri Alhabsie, Prof. Fenny Martha Dwivany, Dr. Neni Sintawardani, and Karlia Meitha, Ph.D.

M. Fikri explained the history and contribution of the For Women in Science (FWIS) program over 20 years, as well as important requirements and schedules for the 2024 selection.

Some important points of the FWIS program include:

 Condition:
 Women must be a maximum of 40 years old as of 30 November 2024
 Have a doctoral education or are currently undergoing doctoral education
 Research in the field of Life Sciences (Materials Science, Earth Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, etc.)

 Important Schedule:
 March 13, 2024: Start accepting applications
 September 1, 2024: Application acceptance deadline
 September 4, 2024: Start of judging period
 12 October 2024: Deliberation period & finalist interviews
 18 October 2024: Announcement of results
 November 2024: Inauguration of For Women in Science (FWIS) 2024

The next session from the jury explained the 5 judging criteria, namely:

 Originality
 Research impact to country, strategic impact including research potential for sustainable collaboration to build institutions/research groups in Indonesia.
 Problem statements & methodology
 Track records & publications, including h-index, Sinta, Scopus, etc.
 Presentations & writing.

Experiences and Tips from 2023 FWIS Winners

Karlia Meitha, Ph.D., winner of For Women in Science (FWIS) 2023, shared her experience in participating in this program. Even though he experienced failure, he continued to try and finally succeeded in winning with a different research topic. He also provided valuable tips for participants, such as the importance of originality and creativity in research.

Closing

After the experience sharing session with the winners, the event continued with the For Women in Science (FWIS) Form Filling Guide session and a question and answer session between participants and resource persons.

The event providing socialization and presenting information and motivation ended and was closed by the resource person and event guide accompanied by a presentation about how important women are in the world of science and how UNESCO and L'Oréal help facilitate empowerment in the world of research.
