These names were discovered through archives, stories, and magazines from both Indonesia and the Netherlands.

Through extensive research and this exhibition, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the stories of these women, who persevered during the challenging post-independence period in Indonesia. The exhibition highlights the experiences of women who not only survived but also made significant contributions to future planning and development for a more egalitarian society. Despite facing different challenges from their generation, these women actively transcended the social boundaries that often limited women’s roles at the time. They played crucial roles in maintaining a country and environment that were constantly evolving.

This exhibition offers detailed profiles and works of these 12 women who were involved in Indonesia’s post-independence planning and development. Through biographies focusing on their education and careers, the exhibition voices their life stories and professional achievements in both private and public sectors, from architectural design to teaching. Their portraits not only symbolize the journey of feminist history in architecture but also add diversity to the way of thinking in the field.

In addition to honoring Indonesian female architects, the exhibition also emphasizes cross-national development processes, particularly between Indonesia and the Netherlands. This collaboration reflects significant political and social changes, both locally and internationally. Major projects by these women are presented individually, but together, they contribute to a broader collaborative effort that has widespread impacts.

This project aims to strengthen collaborations between researchers and artists from Indonesia and the Netherlands. The exhibition is supported by various collaborators, including artists, designers, and architects working in Bandung, and Dutch collaborators such as Fitti Misarya, Pratiwi Djaj Kusnohardjono, Leyla Awyishuriatna, Adena Septi Yoswara, and Wesker Kruis. Additionally, the sustainable project-based program Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) supports the growth of future research.

As a result of this transoceanic collaboration, the exhibition was first presented under the theme “Transoceanic Disclosures: Weaving Architectural Histories”. It was held at multiple locations, including the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), Mall Jakarta, as well as in the Netherlands. This exhibition is part of the ongoing effort to highlight the under-documented contributions of women in Indonesia’s architectural history.

The collaboration was further supported by institutions such as Hogeschool Rotterdam and Rotterdamse Academie Voor Beeldende Kunsten, with funding from Cendoren Rotterdamse NL through the Support Open Call Hidden Histories scheme. Additionally, the Dutch Embassy played a role in connecting researchers from Indonesia and the Netherlands to develop this exhibition and research further.

In this exhibition, names such as Kharezat Adanan, Dr. Ing. Erika Yuni Astuti, S.T, M.T. (SAPPK ITB), Lynne Aryehanow, Ruthie Lee, Fitti Misarya, Maria Neera Fernandes, and Lindel Taminan played crucial roles as researchers. Together, they compiled the exhibition materials that tell the stories of pioneering female architects in Indonesia. Support from universities in both Indonesia and the Netherlands, as well as interdisciplinary collaborations with researchers and artists, made this exhibition an essential part of documenting women’s architectural history in Indonesia.
