SKY BRIGHTNESS, SEEING, AND WEATHER MEASUREMENT AT NASIONAL OBSERVATORY, EAST NUSA TENGGARA

Introduction
In 2015, a joint collaboration project to build a new observatory in Mount Timau, East Nusa Tenggara was initiated between LAPAN, ITB, UNDANA, Kupang Regency and East Nusa Tenggara governments. The site selection is based on initial studies of cloud cover over Indonesia on 1996-2010 (Hidayat et al., 2012), sky brightness on July 6, 2013 (Irfan et al, 2013), and seeing measurements on September 2007 (Dermawan et al., 2010), 7-8 May and 26 October 2013 (Putra et al., 2013). Continuous data on weather (temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed and rain fall), sky brightness, and seeing are needed to generate and justify the observation programs of the observatory.

 

Data and Methods
The data are obtained using various instruments: 1) AWS Davis Vantage Vue 6250 is a compact instrument barometer, thermohigrometer, anemometer and rain collector to measure continuous weather data; 2) Sky Quality Meter is a CMOS detector, equipped with a filter that has a spectral response similar to the human eye to measure the sky brightness around zenith; and 3) A telescope (diameter 20 cm, f/10) and CCD video camera to measure seeing using the Differential Image Motion Monitor (DIMM) method (i.e. the image of star is recorded with high temporal resolution through different apertures so that the lights of the star is passing through different air mass column. The difference of relative distance between the images represent the variations of atmospheric turbulence). Due to permission issues to install the instruments at Mount Timau, we perform the measurement from Amfoang Tengah District which is located at 124?00′ 04″ East and 09?40′ 28″ South (1071 m dpl). The data was taken in August 26, 2017 for less than a month before power failure occured and prevent us for getting more data. We will continue collecting data next year and preparing the material for publishing.

 

This is the sample of weather data obtained in August, 26 to September 6, 2017.
